Doug began piping
lessons with Ian MacDougall at the age of 11. As
soon as he was on pipes he began playing with Ian’s
Abbotsford Legion Pipe Band. Doug played with this
band until it disbanded in January 2000. He competed
individually for many years finishing at the Grade
One solo level.
The
Abbotsford Legion Pipe Band evolved into a premier
Grade One band during the early 1990’s changing its
name in the process to the Abbotsford Police Pipe
Band. During his 15 seasons with the band Doug had
instruction under Ian MacDougall, Alan Bevan, and
Hal Senyk.
With
membership changes in 1996 Doug was promoted to Pipe
Sergeant in and then in the fall of 1997 to Pipe
Major. Under his leadership the band placed 7th in
piping, 13th overall in the Grade One qualifying
round in 1999.
Following the disbanding of Abbotsford Police, Doug,
Fred Hansford, and Ian MacDougall agreed to integrate
with Chilliwack & District Pipe Band and also create
the Fraser Valley Youth Pipe Band. Doug is currently
the Pipe Major of the Chilliwack & District Pipe
Band and instructs the Fraser Valley Youth Pipe
Band. Doug lives in Chilliwack with his wife Cheryl
and two children Calum and Kaylee.
